I recently spent an afternoon in Genova checking out two of its best viewpoints. My goal was pretty straightforward: get two great shots from overlooks across town.
I had my Canon R5 Mark II on my chest with the Canon RF 15-35 f2.8mm, my 5D Mark IV with the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 MK III lens on my hip, and honestly, more gear than I probably needed, but hey, that’s travel photography for you.
The first stop meant tackling some serious stairs, which turned out to be a bit more challenging than I expected, mostly because I’ve gotten a bit out of shape lately (recently becoming a dad does that to you).
Once I reached the top, though, the view totally made up for it. Layers of the city were spread out beneath me, catching the sunlight just right. It was exactly the kind of shot I was hoping for. Standing there, looking down at the city, reminded me why I love photography, you get to take in details you might otherwise miss.
From there, I headed through the city toward Piazza Ferrari, one of Genova’s most iconic piazzas. It’s a lively spot with an epic fountain, full of locals and tourists soaking up the sun and atmosphere.
After a quick break, I wandered deeper into the Caruggi, the narrow, winding streets that give Genova its charm. Honestly, these alleyways felt like a mix between Venice and Naples, filled with hidden corners and unexpected details.

The second stop meant another uphill walk through quaint streets. After a good climb (seriously), I was rewarded with another stunning vista overlooking the city’s famous port. The complexity and number of buildings sprawling below was incredible.
After grabbing the shots I wanted, it was time for lunch. I stumbled across Antica Vaccheria, which turned out to be a fantastic spot. Delicious food, friendly people, and an impressive beer selection, exactly my kind of place.
Just as I was about to leave, I noticed a funicular conveniently located right next door to the restaurant. A quick two-minute ride later, I was back down at street level, wrapping up my little Genova adventure.
