I recently decided to challenge myself with a hike through one of my favorite stretches of Liguria, Italy. The twist was that I could only take photographs using the first camera I ever bought-the Canon Rebel XTI from 2006, complete with its original 18-55mm kit lens, and absolutely no editing allowed afterward.
I did the hike with my wife and daughter, which made the experience even more special.
Starting in Ruta di Camogli
The day began in Ruta di Camogli, where we set out through the stunning paths of Il Parco Naturale Regionale di Portofino. Right away, it felt nostalgic, and honestly, a little strange. After years of shooting professionally with much more advanced gear, holding this lightweight camera again felt surreal.
Its limitations became apparent quickly: limited autofocus, a maximum ISO of 1600, no live-view mode, and an LCD screen nearly useless from age. But surprisingly, those limitations were freeing and exciting.
As we moved through lush, shaded paths and sunny coastal stretches, I became hyper-aware of every setting. The simplicity forced me to be deliberate and present in each frame. The familiar “ka-chihhnnk” sound of the old shutter became my unexpected favorite part of the experience.

Exploring Portofino
The hike itself was spectacular, winding through picturesque spots before reaching the charming, yet famously luxurious, village of Portofino. We wandered through town, appreciating the brilliant colors and architectural charm, everything felt even more vibrant under the bright Ligurian sun.
My favorite part of the day though, was easily the scenic coastal walk from Portofino to Santa Margherita Ligure. This stretch never disappoints- always peaceful, with sweeping sea views and dotted with quiet shaded spots.
By the end of this roughly 7-mile journey, I’d rekindled my appreciation for how photography began for me: simple, intentional, and full of delightful imperfections.
