Venice – Amaze in the Midst of Beauty

Minimalistic photo of Gondola taken in Venice, Italy by Photographer Scott Allen Wilson

The first thing I thought when I arrived in Venice for the first time was “These people are out of their minds”. When you think about how and why Venice was constructed, the city suddenly becomes way more fascinating. As an escape from repeated attacks from barbarians, the island was built by people on top of a shallow marsh.

(Insert scene from Monty Python where the king talks about building his castle in a swamp)

Being said, as soon as you see Venice, you’ll sense something special in the air. Just seeing all the boats, lack of cars, lack of even bicycles- it’s like stepping back into another time.

Everytime I visit Venice I am always mesmerized by its architecture, and all its hidden gems and hideaways it has to offer. The gondoliers, the bridges, and slowly-eroding monuments provide such a romantic vibe. The sad reality is, however, that Venice relies on (and enables) mass tourism to enter its lagoon. While the seas keep rising, and the island keeps sinking- Venice can’t seem to save itself from the greed and corruption that has plagued this beautiful city. Venice as we know it won’t last forever, and so while I will never support the cruise ships and waves of tourists flooding its narrow streets, I do support individuals and very small groups of travellers visiting this magical place. If you do go- buy locally made products. Support restaurants and bars that are keeping the treasured traditions of Venice alive. Say no to fast foods, and do your part to keep the streets and canals clean, and most importantly- educate yourself on the ecology of Venice, and learn what you can do to help support the islands in the lagoon in meaningful ways.

For those of you that love Venice as much as I do- I’m so excited to share my Collection of Venice, that I believe captures the truly magical beauty of this city- photos that I’ve captured for myself, but also for those who may never be able to experience la belezza di Venezia.

Venice is for the dreamers and romantics of this world. Those who are lost, and in being lost seek deeper meaning within themselves. I’ve wandered endlessly through Venice’s winding streets, and I’ve put together a collection that I find to be both inspiring and emotionally provocative. The silence of the quietest canals, narrow paths where your thoughts and dreams run free through your mind. Just like its name says, A Silent Waterway is a perfect example of this, as well as Thoughts Float.

Also, other emotions are portrayed in the Bridge of Sighs, where you don’t have to dig in too much to feel the romance in this print. The bridge is a white arch full of detail and organic figures of the renaissance architecture. The tradition says that if you kiss with your partner while going under the bridge, you will enjoy eternal love.

Just as romantic emotion can thrive in the feeling of the unknown, my adventurous spirit awaits the mystery awaiting after every turn. That is what I feel every time I watch Venetian waterways like the one on Into the Infinite. I feel the chills of mystery, navigating through a maze and discovering every hidden pathway in the city.

Now look deeper inside the city. An entire city that man built on top of on top of mud, and yet still gleams with gold and pride. Lifted grants you a view as if you were sitting just in front of the the roof of St. Mark’s. The dome is surrounded by a clear sky, and the golden pieces stand out to make this print look like an ornate piece of jewelry.

As I mentioned before, there is no better way to transport to Venice than by navigating through its waterways. The narrow buildings in the street give the city an atmosphere of fantasy that makes you want to explore every turn. Mount any of these prints in a room and you will travel to the magical city of Venice with just a glance-

For lovers of blue and the satisfaction of symmetry- there’s no better way to decorate a colorful wall than with a print like The Temptress. The sky in this image is so vibrant, and the green pyramid with the golden Archangel Gabriel is a great way to brighten up any room.

Whether you are an architecture fan or a traveler- I’m sure you will love my Venice Collection, and understand how The Floating City gave birth to a lot of my wanderlust. Photography is not only a way of seeing the world, but also a way of giving meaning to to your walls- creating your own stories behind every print, and letting your eyes get lost into a scene frozen in time. If you found one that you love, please don’t hesitate to purchase one or more, and please also know that you can always reach out to me to ask for a custom request for a change in the frame, size, or passe-partout.
